Saliva Singer Bobby Amaru Talks ‘Rise Up’ Album, Joining the Band + More

A new era of Saliva is under way and the band has a solid new album to support called ‘Rise Up.’ Though fans got a taste of the new look Saliva last year with ‘In It to Win It,’ the group is making more of a promotional push for ‘Rise Up’ with new frontman Bobby Amaru stepping into the spotlight.

Loudwire had a chance to speak with Amaru ahead of the album’s release and he shared how he’s been welcomed into the group by the Saliva members and their fans, the creative process for their new album and some of his favorite tracks on the disc. The vocalist also discussed their spring touring and shared some of the artists who influenced his own live performance along the way. Check out our interview with Saliva’s Bobby Amaru below:

Congratulations on the new record. I was a big fan of what Saliva did in the ’90s and the ‘Rise Up’ album feels like it’s right there with some of the early stuff. How cool is it to be a part of this?

It’s really good man, it’s definitely the album we wanted to make. We wanted to kind of get back to what Saliva was about. Also, to not be afraid to try some different things that we never really tried before.

Saliva, ‘Lost’: Exclusive Song Premiere

Bobby Amaru says his marching orders were pretty clear when he joined Saliva at the beginning of 2012 to replace original frontman Josey Scott.

“They wanted a new energy,” Amaru, who was leading his own band and had also been the drummer for Burn Season prior to joining Saliva, tells Billboard. “When we talked on the phone the first time, they told me what they were looking for. They said they really liked my voice and liked my energy and, I guess, my vibe, and they said they had been lacking that for awhile. As they would tell you, it wasn’t fun anymore in the band. It was almost like they needed a new fire, and I feel like I definitely added a new energy to the band.”

Saliva, ‘Rise Up’ – Exclusive Video Premiere

Saliva are back with the title track from their new album, ‘Rise Up,’ and the band is teaming with Loudwire to exclusively bring you the premiere of the ‘Rise Up’ video.

The clip was directed by Jon Vulpine and is split between fiery performance footage and a narrative that follows a young couple as they’re trailed by a vicious gang of masked assailants. The imminent danger faced is perfectly offset by frontman Bobby Amaru belting the line, “Tomorrow could be the end.”

Frontman Bobby Amaru told Loudwire of the song, “‘Rise Up’ was just kind of where we were at and how I felt. That whole like, been there with no regrets kind of thing. You kind of overcome the everyday challenge of life. A lot of people can relate to that.”

Famous firsts: Saliva’s Wayne Swinny

A lot of people assumed that Saliva were out for the count when lead singer and founding member Josey Scott quit the best-selling, Memphis-based metal quartet in 2011.

As it turns out, rumors of the band’s demise were greatly exaggerated – the group sounded badder and bigger than ever with new vocalist Bobby Amaru leading the charge on last year’s In It To Win It, and their upcoming set, Rise Up (due out April 29th) could stand as a musical career high.

Ahead of the album’s release, Saliva are breaking in some new songs live on a US tour. Between dates, guitarist Wayne Swinny sat down with MusicRadar for a little thing we call Famous Firsts.

What was your first guitar, and how old were you when you got it?

“My first guitar was a department store no-name model Strat copy from Fred P. Gattas on Knight Arnold in Memphis, Tennessee. My dad took me. I got a guitar, a 15-watt combo amp and Kiss’ Dressed To Kill for around 50 bucks, which was a lot of groceries back then. [Laughs] That store and my dad are long gone, but I remember it like it was yesterday. That day changed my life forever.”

Wayne Swinny Interview: SALIVA Rise Up with Vengeance on Brilliant New CD

An exciting new chapter has been written in the Saliva saga that entails a sensational new singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, a brilliant new CD that may be their finest recording to date, a new record label, and the launch of a new tour. Saliva is back with rock ‘n’ roll vengeance!

SALIVA has been conquering audiences with their eclectic mix of rock, metal, grunge, rap, and hip-hop … ceremoniously labeled as nu metal or hard alternative …since the band’s inception in 1996. The Memphis based band released their self-titled debut album the following year under the Rocking Chair Records label. Saliva’s second studio album Every Six Seconds would not be released until 2001 but had catapulted the band into the mainstream while achieving commercial success. The album spawned the proverbial favorites … “Superstar,” “After Me,” “Click, Click Boom,” and “Your Disease.” Many of the songs were featured in such motion pictures as The Fast and the Furious and Dracula 2000. Saliva also financially benefited with their music by being featured in various video games and sporting events including Monster Jam and WrestleMania. Every Six Seconds also instituted the band’s relationship with Island Records.

In 2002, Saliva scored commercially again with their first single entitled “Always” from the Back into Your System album. The single reached #1 on the Modern Rock Tracks and became Saliva’s biggest hit to date. The track was also featured in the game Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock. The album also spawned the hit “Rest in Pieces” penned by James Michael & Nikki Sixx of Mötley Crüe and a third single “Raise Up.” Saliva was also chosen to support Kiss and Aerosmith on tour in 2003.

Survival of the Sickest (#20 on the Billboard 200) was the group’s fourth studio release in 2004. The album launched two singles …”Survival of the Sickest” and “Razor’s Edge.” The band continued to reap rewards for their music being included in video games and pay per view specials. Guitarist Chris D’ Abaldo parted ways with Saliva in 2005. Jonathan Montoya (Full Devil Jacket) eventually replaced him as the new rhythm guitarist.

Saliva released the single “Ladies and Gentlemen” in 2006 reaching #2 on the U.S. Mainstream Rock charts and became the band’s best- selling single. The single was followed-up with the album Blood Stained Love Story in 2007. The release sold 31,000 copies in its first week.

In 2010, Jonathan Montoya exited the band and Saliva announced it would continue as a four piece group.

In 2011, Saliva released Under Your Skin their seventh studio effort. It would also be their final studio album with longtime frontman Josie Scott. The album spawned the single “Nothing.”The track “Badass” co-written by Wayne Swinny was featured in the film Saw 3D.

SALIVA TODAY: Their back to rock basics line-up is … Bobby Amaru (lead vocals), Wayne Swinny (guitars), David Novotny (bass guitar) and Paul Crosby (drums/percussion). Their brand new single “Rise Up” is available to purchase at all digital stores. Rise Up …their incredible new CD on their new label… Rum Bum Records will be available to purchase on April 29th. Saliva is currently on tour and recently performed several dates in Florida.

I had the great privilege recently to chat extensively with original Saliva guitarist Wayne Swinny. Wayne and I chatted about Rise Up… their latest album and its lyrical meaning, new lead singer and songwriter Bobby Amaru, the departing of Josey Scott, touring with Kiss and Aerosmith, a rock and roll comeback, Football … and so much more!

Here’s my interview with lead guitarist and songwriter for ‘Saliva’ and die-hard Oakland Raiders fan…WAYNE SWINNY.

Interview – Bobby Amaru of Saliva

During the height of the nu-metal wave in the early 2000′s, a few bands stood tall above the rest and provided rock fans with something unique. Formed in Memphis, TN back in 1996, Saliva took rock by storm in 2001 with their sophomore album Every Six Seconds. Now going strong for eighteen years, the band has sold over 2.5 million albums, toured the world and become one of the most recognized names in hard rock. When the announcement came in 2011 that long-time vocalist Josey Scott and the band parted ways, many thought that was the end of the band. Proving critics wrong, Saliva’s never say die attitude prevailed with the addition of vocalist Bobby Amaru to the mix. With a new voice at the helm and a brand new offering of Saliva tunes ready to be released on their ninth studio album Rise Up, theses veteran rockers are ready to make a big move in 2014. Recently we sat down with the new voice of Saliva, Bobby Amaru, for a look at his beginnings with the band, their new album, his approach to winning over fans, and much more.

CrypticRock.com - Saliva has been together for almost two decades now. The band has had a series of successful singles and a diverse list of albums to their name. When you were asked to join the band as the new voice of Saliva back in 2012, how did it happen?

Bobby Amaru - We just had some mutual friends. Living in Jacksonville, some of my friends knew them and worked with them before. They heard some of my stuff and asked if I would be interested in working with them. There was really no audition, it was very simple.

Interview: Bobby Amaru – Saliva

BearlySinister:
First of all, I’d like to state that I’ve been a fan of Saliva from the beginning. I saw you guys in 2012 w/October Rage, I walked up and shook your hand and told you I was thoroughly impressed with your live performance. The same can definitely be said of your studio ability! You don’t see that very often these days anymore.

Bobby:
Yeah, ya know, I appreciate it man. We work pretty hard to try to bring the live show and I do as well. I take it very serious. What show did you see us? What show was it?

BearlySinister:
It was Beaumont, TX at The Gig on Crockett St.

Bobby:
Oh, OK! Yeah, yeah, yeah, so you live there?

BearlySinister:
Well, I’m FROM Texas, we moved to Kansas about a year ago.

Bobby:
Oh, OK. Yeah, we love playing Beaumont! We did a Halloween show there!

Music executive veteran Jimmy Swan officially joins Rum Bum Records

February 4th, 2014

Earlier this year, Music executive veteran Jimmy Swan officially joined the Rum Bum Records team to work with its acts signed to the label. Rum Bum Records is based in Miami, Florida and was created by entertainment visionary entrepreneur Luis Bacardi. The label currently has rock acts Saliva and Surrender The Fall signed to its roster. Surrender The Fall released its debut album “Burn In The Spotlight” on September 18th, 2012, while Saliva is currently putting the final touches on their debut album with Rum Bum Records currently titled “Rise Up” with the lead single of the same name to be released late spring.

Jimmy Swan has spent the last 20 years in the music industry on the management and record label side of the business. Jimmy started in 1994 when he was 18 years old as a concert promoter, band manager and booking agent.  By the time he was 20, Jimmy was promoting over 200 shows nationwide, booking for over 27 bands, and managed 7 bands while attending school at Dallas Baptist University. In 2007, he dedicated all efforts to running a record label and was responsible for the signing and marketing of The Dirty Heads, 12 Stones, Alien Ant Farm, Jovany Javier, Chris Medina and Jamiroquai under a record label distributed by Fontana / Universal.  The Dirty Heads song “ Lay Me Down,” holds the Billboard Record as the first indie label ever to get a #1 on the Billboard Rock charts and has the longest running single ever with 11 consecutive weeks on the Billboard Alternative Charts, all spearheaded by Jimmy’s efforts and team assembly.

Jimmy Swan will be involved in all aspects of Rum Bum Records from signing acts to International expansion, starting with the current roster of Saliva and Surrender The Fall. Jimmy is looking forward to working with Rum Bum Records as he is quoted below.

“I am excited to finally be with a label that understands the importance of quality and marketing.  Luis Bacardi’s passion for music is extremely motivating and is the recipe for success.  I am glad to be a part of the Rum Bum family where my 20 years of experience and relationships are not limited by lack of vision. Working with Saliva, who is a multi platinum established iconic rock band, and introducing Surrender The Fall, could possibly be my most successful release year to date. The staffs already assembled at Rum Bum are some of the hardest working and best crew I have ever had the privilege of working with.”

Surrender The Fall: NewOrleansLocal.com review

Surrender The Fall Video for ‘Some Kind Of Perfect’ is MTV Buzzworthy Festival Dates This Summer Debut Album ‘Burn In The Spotlight’ out Now

“Surrender The Fall’s stock in trade is pounding pedal-through-the-floor rock, a loud abundance that includes first single “Love Hate Masquerade”-Billboard

“Surrender the Fall finds its own ‘spotlight’”-Flint Journal

Surrender the Fall’s new video for Some Kind of Perfect is premiering on MTV.com Buzzworthy right now.

“The music of Memphis’ Surrender The Fall is a throwback to the days when glammy hard rock bands ruled the airwaves, so it’s no surprise that their videos would call some of the classic tropes of the hair metal period as well. Their new clip for “Some Kind of Perfect,” from their recent Burn In the Spotlight album, is a collection of those timeless rock video themes that we remember from back in the day, but with a contemporary update. Clearly, Surrender The Fall has learned from their forefathers — and they wanna ROCK. Which, I might mention, they totally do and they totally do well.” – MTV Buzzworthy

The band’s debut album, Burn in the Spotlight was released via Rum Bum Records on September 18, 2012 and has already spawned two Top 40 Rock Singles with Love Hate Masquerade and Some Kind of Perfect.

Surrender The Fall: 850 Music Blog Review

The Memphis Tennessee band Surrender the Fall has exploded onto the modern rock scene in the last year. With a single currently at 40 on the active rock chart, lead singer Jared Cole granted an interview to talk about the past, future, and happenstance that makes up Surrender the Fall’s story.

Cole credits a musically inclined family for having an early interest in music at age thirteen. “As far as what got me into it; I just always loved music, always love melody, always loved the creative process of putting things together, and seeing things come to fruition.”

Calling he wide ranging tastes in music as ‘music without prejudice’ he gave up highschool football because his desire to play music came first. “I often wonder if I ever run into him,” Cole speaking on his high school football coach, “if he would be kind of sour about it or if he would be congratulatory. I don’t know.”

Don’t assume you have Surrender the Fall pegged as that lucky band that never had to pay their dues. “We are really excited about everything that has been going on. It puts us in a place that we haven’t been in before. As far as to the world, we are a baby band, but this band has been around for seven years.”

In fact, there was a time that the band had become so jaded that they nearly ignored the opportunity that catapulted them to the national stage. “We’d been around for a while, so for a band to be kicking it for years and not see as many results as they would like to see, we had gotten really jaded at that point. We had toyed with the idea of dissolving the band. At the last minute Luis Bacardi, who is the owner of the label, hits us up a third time.”

The third time was the charm. Surrender the Fall showcased at a Lollapalooza afterparty at the Chicago Hard Rock Hotel. About six weeks later, the band was recording at Sonic Ranch on Mr. Bacardi’s Rum Bum label.

Cole often uses phrases like ‘universal’ and ‘Cinderella story’ to describe Surrender the Fall’s path to commercial recognition  Each member has their own tale of happenstance, simply being at the right place at the right time, that led up to their joining the band.

Guitarist Eddie Tyre was displaced due to Katrina. One listen of the band’s demo convinced him to leave behind the idea of rebuilding his house and move to Memphis.

Guitarist Anthony Pitt’s life turned from football to music after one play managed to tear three of the four major ligaments in his knee. When a previous member made the decision to leave the band without much notice, it was Pitts that Cole thought of. A quick audition, less than a week’s worth of rehearsal, and Pitts was in New Orleans playing back to back gigs.

One of the things that most impressed me during my talk with Cole was his eagerness to share the spotlight with his bandmates. He is proud of the band, what they have accomplished, and is quick to talk about the importance of being equals. “None of us would be here if it wasn’t for the other person.  So it’s not like there is a rockstar in this band. Nobody gets paid more, nobody gets more credit here or there or anything like that. We split everything.”

“We have this saying that a band that gets paid together stays together. We couldn’t do it without each other and it is definitely a family.”

Surrender the Fall is hoping to return to the studio to record new material as soon as this Spring. “Fortunately we are constantly writing and constantly building the catalog. Throwing ideas and demoing and doing pre-production on our own. That is what we love to do.  The creative process keeps everything alive for us.”

However he becomes the most audibly excited when talking about the upcoming video for ‘Some Kind of Perfect.’ Cole wouldn’t give away much about the video’s content saying, “It is going to blow people away. This thing is insane. We had a great time shooting ‘Love Hate Masquerade’ and we sat down with said how are we going to one-up this one?”

“I have never been more excited about a video in my entire life. This thing is going to be savage and I can’t wait for people to see it.” The release date is tentatively set in the next two.

“We can’t wait to get back out on the road. We are a live, band, that is what we love to do. Touring for us, making the shit go down and having a good time is what we like to do.”

“We love what we do and love were we are at right now.  We are just making the most of it.”
